Fort Whyte MCC & PLC Upgrade

Spanning Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, the PLC pipeline system transports NGLs to producers in Western Canada and NGL customers throughout Canada and the northern U.S.
Plains Midstream has been upgrading and modernizing its electrical, instrumentation, and controls system equipment.

We already had a steady relationship with Plains Midstream for several years and they trusted our team to complete a $4 million upgrade of the Fort Whyte terminal. They enlisted us to assist with the design, programming, construction management, and commissioning to upgrade the existing terminal’s power distribution and automation systems.

The upgrade comprises a new MCC building, new raceways to all existing devices, a new central PLC cabinet with remote I/O, and the removal of all the previous obsolete switchgear and PLC equipment. In addition, upgrades were designed for the new instrument air system, which included the installation of a new instrument air building and all auxiliary systems.

Design complexity, brownfield complications, and a tight schedule posed interesting challenges for our team. We had to ensure a collaborative work schedule with other companies. But working together, our team was able to implement safe strategies and get the job done on time and on budget.
