Spanning Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, the PLC pipeline system transports NGLs to producers in Western Canada and NGL customers throughout Canada and the northern U.S.. Plains Midstream has been upgrading and modernizing its electrical, instrumentation and controls system equipment.

Through more than 200 projects and a 9-year relationship, Orion Engineering has worked to ensure this crucial pipeline stays operational and the Westcoast Gas Transmission system operates at peak performance.

NorthRiver Midstream

DCS Upgrades

A relative newcomer to the Oil & Gas industry, NorthRiver Midstream approached us to support an upgrade of their existing ABB distributed control systems (DCS) within their Fort Nelson and McMahon Gas Plant facilities. These systems were at end of life and required unique DCS upgrades with several significant challenges to overcome to ensure the facilities remained online throughout the project.

For over 70 years, Calgary-based Pembina Pipeline Corporation has been a leading transportation and midstream service provider serving North America's energy industry. Their Edmonton North Nexus Terminal is a crucial distribution hub needing expansion.

Joffre Cogeneration Plant
13.8KV/138KV Substation Replacement

In 2012 we upgraded Joffre’s substation GE Harris D20++ RTU to an Allen Bradley-based Controllogix PLC.

 

Our team was responsible for the conceptual and detailed engineering design, project budgeting, PLC design programming, and ongoing project management.

Encana

Cabin Gas Plant Startup & Commissioning

Encana hired us to assist with commissioning and start-up of a new Cabin Gas plant. In coordination with the commissioning team from the contracted engineering firm, we commissioned the plants utility heat medium system, water wells, and water treatment system. All the commissioning work was done in accordance with the controls narrative supplied by the EPC responsible for the project.

EV Charging Station Installations

Electrify Canada’s mandate is to install throughout Canada the fastest DC chargers compatible with most electric vehicles. Electrify Canada has installed over 32 of 128 scheduled EV charging stations with more to follow.

Plains Midstream

Empress MCC Upgrade

The project scope of work encompassed installing two modular MCC buildings, which housed 480VAC MCCs, Honeywell C300 DCS, VFDs, transformers, AC units, and junction box equipment. The project also involved upgrading the main feed to the plant, implementing a new cable bus system, and enhancing feeds and cable raceways to all MCC loads.

TTLR VRU PLC & PSV Upgrade

In order to replace the obsolete PLC500 (SLC) system for the Vapor Recovery Unit (VRU) at the client's Burnaby facility, a solution was developed and agreed to replace existing SLC500 hardware with Rockwell's ControlLogix (1756) system.

Hardisty Fiber Replacement

The project scope involved replacing and upgrading the existing damaged multimode fiber (MMF) between the MCC-6 building at Hardisty Terminal and the Hardisty Frac Plant with a new 48-strand single-model fiber optic cable.

The project scope consisted of upgrades to the existing PLC control system physical infrastructure and software at both the Edmonton and Hardisty terminals to improve the overall system's resiliency and reliability.

Westcoast MCC Upgrade Program

The program scope of work involved upgrading obsolete 130VDC and 480VAC Motor Control Centers (MCCs) with new WESCO/Eaton MCCs across 11 compressor stations on the Westcoast Pipeline system, which delivers natural gas to the B.C. lower mainland and Northwestern U.S.

MS-21 Meter Station Upgrade & Relocation

There was a necessity to relocate and upgrade an existing meter station, MS-21, due to recurring spring flooding from a proximate river. The project scope entailed the construction of a new meter building to accommodate all the requisite instrumentation, piping, and electrical equipment essential for metering all the gas at this new site.

MINING & WATER TREATMENT

Anglo American

Water Treatment Plant Upgrade

Anglo American needed assistance with removing contaminants from two existing ponds on the mine site by transferring wastewater to a central water treatment plant. To fulfill the project requirements, two pump stations were installed at each pond along with two new pipelines to transfer to the water to an existing water treatment plant for purification.

AESO Network Enhancements

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) mandates robust network architectures to be maintained. We worked on designing, sourcing materials, programming, installing, and commissioning the necessary components to upgrade Dow's existing connection to a fully redundant network connection with AESO.

Process Control System Network Upgrades

The control system network at the Joffre Generation Facility underwent a thorough upgrade and redesign. This was done to address concerns about network hardware becoming obsolete and to ensure that the network and security architecture complied with the latest industrial communication and security practices, including NERC CIP.
